Matt slowly climbed the gleaming staircase of the Goldberg, Ligner and Shyster reception area. He reached the top and crossed the foyer, his footsteps echoing throughout the empty hall. He passed the reception desk and was greeted by the secretary.
"Good morning Matt", Kathy said.
"Mornin' Kathy", Matt replied sourly.
He continued towards the security office and raised his identification card towards the scanner. After a brief 'beep' the lock on the door disengaged. He stepped inside. The room was quite small. On the far side there was a set of lockers which contained security guard outfits like his own. To the right of Matt, there was another set of lockers, though these were securely locked. Inside there was an old Remington 11-87 and a few Glock.22's with assorted ammunition. To his left there was a large computer terminal with multiple screens. He retrieved a earpiece from the locker and settled himself before the camera feeds. Matt's eyes remained trained on the screens though he didn't expect any real action. After being honourably discharged with a purple heart for a leg injury, 12 years of military experience had landed him a cushy job as the head security guard in a government building. He missed the army days. When he was under fire with his unit, he never felt more at home. The day droned on. By 1PM Matt was snoring quietly in his chair. He was awoke by the buzz of interference on his earpiece.
"Reports of a disturbance on the 4th floor. Units respond."
"Matusiak responding."
Matt laboured up from his chair and proceeded towards the staircase. By the time he reached the 4th floor, two other guards were already there. At first glance it appeared they were trying to talk to a young man, though he seemed to be ignoring them.
"What's the problem?", Matt questioned.
One of the guards attention shifted from the young man to his superior.
"Dunno' boss. The kids lost it. One of the workers stated that he tried to bite her."
"Bite her?", Matt replied in an unbelieving tone.
"Yessir".
Matt turned to the man.
"Hey!"
The young man stirred. He turned to Matt. His mouth hung open and his pale eyes writhed under half closed eyelids. Matt brushed his hand over his holster. No need to do anything hasty, but the man was delirious...and possibly dangerous. The delirious man growled lightly. Matt unbuttoned his holster and drew his firearm. One of the guards intervened.
"Woah, Woah! Lets just calm down here".
The man growled again, this time much louder. Matt tightened his grip around his pistol. The man screeched and bounded across the room like an animal towards Matusiak. Time slowed down. Matt's honed military instincts took over. He lifted the Glock to eye level and pointed the guns barrel to the man's head. He squeezed the trigger. A thunderous band followed and a flash of light darted across the room. The man recoiled and wobbled unsteadily. A dark bloody hole had appeared where his eye should have been. The man then collapsed, hitting the ground with a 'thump'. Then silence. Matt remained where he was. He stood still, appearing lifeless. Then reality rushed back and Matt stirred. His eyes remained glued to the corpse that lay before him.
"Someone call an ambulance!", one of the guards bellowed.
"Boss? Boss, you ok?"
One of the guards lightly shook his arm.
"...Yeah....I'm fine", Matt replied.
"We'll take care of this. Go back to the office, ok?"
Matt took the advice and slowly turned. He staggered back down the stairs and entered the restroom. He splashed cold water over his face and neck and studied his reflection in the mirror. He hadn't killed someone in 12 years. He then looked at his hands and noticed they were shaking violently. He let out a loud sigh and straightened himself up. He turned and began to leave but stopped when he heard three loud bangs from somewhere above him. Gunshots? No, it wouldn't have been gunshots. When he entered the reception area he became alarmed. People were running here and there. Some were even running out the door. He paced over to the reception desk.
"Kathy, what's going on?"
"I don't know Matt", she replied. "Something's happening uptown. Something bad".
She gestured towards the small TV fixed above the desk. An emergency news report flashed on-screen.
"We now bring you live to our News 5 helicopter".
An aerial view appeared on-screen above central park north. There was heavy rioting and gunshots were being fired.
"We've all been told to go home", Kathy continued. "All security personnel have been assigned V.I.P's to escort".
She handed him a clipboard and he scrolled down the list.
"I've been assigned to a Niko Labroski. Where's his office?"
"Down the hall, last office on the left".
Matt thanked the secretary and ran down the hall. He opened the door and noticed scattered paper on the floor.
"Sir?"
"What is it?", the lawyer replied.
"Sir something's wrong. Were being let out early. There's chaos in the street. I've been ordered to escort you to your car".
"Wait, what are you talking about? What chaos?"
"Look behind you sir", Matt replied.
The lawyer then realised the danger and retrieved a cell phone from his desk. After a short conversation, Labroski grew frustrated and threw the phone against the wall.
"Sir?", Matt asked. "Are you ready to go?"
The man then reached under his desk and retrieved a Glock 22. from under his desk, the same as Matusiak's, and replied,
"Yes, I'm ready to go".
"Good morning Matt", Kathy said.
