Operation Octo - Prologue - Niko Labroski Empty Operation Octo - Prologue - Niko Labroski

Post by XxIrishFeArZz Mon Aug 01, 2011 3:27 pm

Niko Labroski sat at his desk. Once more he attempted to lift the pen in front of him and fill out one of the many requisition forms stacked on his table. He lifted the utensil between his index finger and his thumb but his hand immediately started to shake. The pen slipped from his grasp and fell silently back down onto the desk, landing with a small 'knock'. He became frustrated and swept his arm across the table, throwing stacks of paper onto the tiled ground. He threw himself back onto the chair and run his hand through his jet black hair. He sat in silence. Eventually he stirred and lifted a small picture frame from the table. A man and woman stared back at him through the transparent glass. His parents from Pittsburgh. They were strangers to him now. They were killed in a car crash when he was eleven, His memories of them were faded and the familiar pang of sorrow that usually struck his heart was now gone. There was a knock on the door.
    "Come in", Niko said shakily.
His secretary proceeded in and went to talk, though she hesitated when she saw the scattered forms.
"Mr. Labroski, Roman Bellic is here for his interview."
"Sorry Kathy, but I need you to cancel my appointments today. Reschedule them for after the weekend."
"Of course Mr. Labroski. Do you need anything else?", Kathy asked, sensing the atmosphere.
"No, I'm fine", Niko replied coldly.
The secretary left the office and shut the door behind her. Niko sighed loudly and closed his eyes. He tried to remember. Back to the good old days. Shooting in the fields with his uncle, or reading his old law books. But there was something else.
He was in a silver room, along with colleagues. Computers, monitors, sterile equipment. He was watching through a window. On the other side were two men in white lab coats, along with something else. A steel table. And on it, a corpse. A soldier.
A unknown voice ordered, "Start the procedure." The men on the other side of the window obeyed and one of them brandished a large needle.
He turned to the camera attached to the laptop beside him and said, "Project Immortal Soldier GA Series 291 Compound 11."
He turned the camera to the cadaver and injected the needle into corpses neck. Then there was silence. A moment passed and stayed for far longer than a moment should. Then a beep.....and another...then another. Niko turned to the heart monitor.
"Three beats per minute...and climbing. We may have something here." He turned back to the window. Slowly, the dead soldiers eyes flicked open. They were bloodshot and red. And then the dreaded noise. The noise of failure. The heart monitor flat-lined, the droning ring resounded throughout the entire laboratory. Once the ringing ended there was a stunned silence. All eyes remained on the presumably dead soldier. This was impossible. Slowly the soldier lifted one arm...then another. Finally one of the scientists stirred. He walked over to the soldier.
"Do you know where you are Private?" No response.
Niko waited impatiently. The soldier sat up, moaning. The scientist snapped his finger in front of soldiers pale face.
The scientist turned to his assistant and said, "No cognitive response. Try to..."
Suddenly the soldiers growled and locked its jaw around the man's neck. There was a sickening crunch. Blood sprayed across the observation window. The man bellowed a gargling scream. The other scientist attempted to open the exit door. It was locked. He pounded on the window.
    "Let me out goddamnit!"
Niko's superior coldly ordered, "Terminate it."
Niko rebelled in disbelief, "Our men are in there!" He went to hit the button labelled 'Lock Release' but was stopped.
    "Sir?!"
"That thing is hostile! It is a threat to this entire facility!" He slammed his hand down onto the 'Terminate' panel. A small circular object rotated and protruded from the control panel. The man removed the key from his belt and placed it inside the keyhole. He twisted the key. An alarm sounded and the room was engulfed in flames. When the flames subsided there was silence.
The Artificial Intelligence explained in a plain voice, "Termination complete." Moments passed.
"Weakness is something I cannot afford in this department Labroski. I expect your resignation on my desk tomorrow morning."
Then the memory faded and Niko opened his eyes. He let out another sigh. The sounds of Liberty City intruded through his open window. Car horns, exhausts backfiring, the drone of hot dog vendors, shouting, screaming. Screaming? Niko got up from his chair and walked over to the window. He peered through the dusty pane of glass. He couldn't place where the noise came from. His office door opened. Its hinges groaned under the unexpected weight. A security guard stood in the doorway. He was uncharacteristically pale.
    "Sir?"
    "Yes, what is it?"
"Sir, something's wrong. We've all been told to go home early. There's chaos in the streets. I've been ordered to escort you to your car."
"Wait, what are you talking about? What chaos?"
    "Look behind you sir."
Niko returned to looking out the window. Then he understood. He turned quickly and retrieved a Whiz! Wireless cellphone from the desk drawer. He accessed the Phone-book and selected the entry 'Uncle'. He pressed call and lifted the mobile to his ear. The phone rang twice...three times...four times. Then it was answered by a familiar voice.
    "Hello?"
"Uncle! Thank God you answered. It's Niko. Have you seen what's going on? Where are you?"
"I'm in my house. It's crazy outside! People are walking about covered in blood. I think it's some kind of stupid festival", he joked.
"Uncle, get out of there! This is serious, people are dying. Take a gun, get to my apartment. I'll meet you there."
"Nephew, calm down. Everything's fine. Hold on..." Niko heard a lock being released.
"Uncle! Wait don't go outside!" Then Niko heard yelling. The phone was dropped. The call disconnected.
    "Uncle?! Uncle?! S#&t!"
He threw the phone against the wall. It shattered and fell to the ground.
"Sir, are you ready to go?" asked the security guard.
Niko Labroski reached for the underside of the desk. He felt around until his fingers brushed a leather holster nailed into the wood. He unbuttoned the strap and removed the Glock 22. from its case.
He stood up straight and replied to the security guard, "Yes, I'm ready to go."

I'll probably do Matt Matusiak next because it will link in with this one as I might make him the security guard, as this was just the one for Niko Labroski. =) P.S Glad you guys liked it.
